Episode 8: When Students Can’t Blend Sounds Into Words

A recording by Jennifer Hoffman at Inside The Reading Lesson

Special Monday Episode!

I recorded a new podcast episode this week after a conversation I had with a teacher during my workshop in Canton, NY.

She described a 5th grader who could segment sounds in words but could not blend them back together, even with continuous sounds like /m/, /n/, and /s/.

I’ve seen this too.

And honestly, that moment has to be slowed down and really looked at because if we can’t blend smoothly, reading is going to stay effortful.

In this episode, I talk through how I start thinking through those situations instructionally.
